Get Informed | Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone - MEK)

What is Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone or MEK)?

To understand the structure of this compound, start with a single carbon and attach an oxygen to it with a double bond. What you now have is a carboxyl functional group; it has two open (free) bonds so it is not yet a compound. Now take methane (CH₄) and convert it into a methyl group (CH₃–) by removing one hydrogen. Next take ethane (CH₃–CH₃) and convert it to an ethyl group (–CH2CH₃) by removing one hydrogen. Attach the methyl and ethyl groups to the two free bonds of the carboxyl group and you now have methyl ethyl ketone.

Methyl Ethyl Ketone or 2-Butanone can be found in adhesives, glues, automobile exhaust, paint and finishes, but it can also be found in fruits, vegetables, and some trees. It is a colorless liquid with a sharp, acetone-like sweet odor and it is highly volatile, easily and evaporating into the air. "2-Butanone is used in such industries as shoe factories, printing plants, plastics factories, and sporting goods manufacturers. This chemical can be used during the hydrofracturing process and can be found in flowback water and has been (described) as a non-petroleum compound associated with fuel spill/leak clean-up investigations. The source of the MEK may be biodegradation of the fuel source by bacteria in the environment." (Source) People who live near a toxic waste site where 2-butanone is kept may breathe it in if it evaporates into the air, or drink it if it gets into the water supply, especially when the water supply comes from wells. "The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified 1,177 sites on its National Priorities List (NPL). 2-Butanone has been found at 137 of these sites." (Source)

How Does Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone or MEK) become a problem?

Because this chemical is used to seal PVC piping, if the piping has not been properly flushed there could be chemical residual. Therefore, there may be short periods of time after construction or a pipe repair when the water will have a rather strong chemical odor. When the concentration of the chemical in water reaches 5.4 ppm (Source), the water will have a strong acetone odor. MEK is quickly absorbed by ingestion, inhalation, and dermal exposure. In an experiment with humans, inhalation absorption was about 50 to 55 percent. There is no absorption data for the oral and dermal routes. Information on the metabolism of absorbed MEK indicates that it does not build up in the body and is likely completely eliminated within a few days after exposure. Therefore, the primary exposure is airborne.

What are the Health Risks for Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone or MEK)?

In water this chemical breaks down in about 2 weeks. Animal studies indicate that MEK in the drinking water caused anemia at a concentration of 12,000 mg/L and other studies suggest mild kidney damage and a decrease in brain weights. The presence of MEK in drinking water can also increase the toxic potential of other organic solvents in the water which is called potentiation or synergy. For example, when MEK was combined with n-hexane exposure, nervous system toxicity was increased; Liver and kidney toxicity increased when MEK was combined with carbon tetrachloride or chloroform exposure. In humans dermatitis has been reported after a skin exposure to methyl ethyl ketone.

What are the Standards for Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone or MEK)?

There is no federal drinking water standard for MEK or 2-Butanone. MEK is not regulated or listed as a primary or secondary drinking water standard by the EPA and there is no federal maximum contaminant level in drinking water. The EPA has established a drinking water equivalent guideline of 20 mg/L (DWEL) and a Lifetime Health Advisory (LHA) for 4 mg/L or 4,000 ppb which was based on the loss of body weight.

The EPA has also set these guidelines for MEK:

One-Day HAL: The level at which a child, drinking 1 liter of water in the course of one day, would not be expected to have any health problems related to MEK, is 75 mg/L.

Ten-Day HAL: The level at which a child, drinking 1 liter of water per day for ten days, would not be expected to have any health problems related to MEK, is 7.5 mg/L.

Some states have set drinking water limits for MEK: Massachusetts - the limit is 4 mg/L. New Hampshire - the limit is 4 mg/L.

Minnesota has set a guidance level of 4 mg/L.

Therefore, MEK may be present in the water at a level that creates a potential long-term health concern but it may not have any odor.

Get Tested | Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone or MEK)

Like many contaminants in drinking water, this compound is potentially hazardous at levels or concentrations that do not impart a noticeable taste, odor, or appearance to the water. Your best course of action is to get you water tested and compile as much information as possible about your water supply source, well construction, surrounding land-use and the historic activities around your water source.

Level 1 | Observational Self-Testing

Notes on Level 1 Testing for Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone)

The only available self screening tests is the presence of a potential sweet odor to the water, conducting a Neighborhood Hazard Report to identify current and historic hazards, properly flushing PVC water lines, using products suitable for well repair that have a low content of leachable organics, and being aware of the land-use activities around your source. The presence of MEK in your water could indicate that other Carcinogenic Volatile Organic Compounds are present. The presence of MEK may be indirectly associated with a metallic sheen on the water. If there is a metallic sheen on the water and when you disperse this sheen and it comes back together, this could mean the water has a petrochemical source of contamination.

Observations for Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone)

This ketone may have a sweet odor and be associated with other organics or inorganic minerals that cause a nuisance condition.

Level 2 | Do-It-Yourself Water Testing

Level 2 Testing is Do-It-Yourself testing that can be done in your own home using a Testing Kit. After you’ve done Level 1 Testing, Level 2 Testing can confirm if your observations are correct. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment (see below) or continue to Level 3 Testing.

Notes on Level 2 Testing for Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone)

There is a very limited amount of in-home screening tests and tools related to MEK or VOCs in drinking water or air. We did find one in-home screening test that may be suitable for screening for multiple indoor health issues (airborne and waterborne in your home). This would be the Yogi Indoor and Drinking Water Assessment Kit available through Amazon.

Level 3 | Informational Water Testing

Level 3 Testing is done through an accredited Water Testing Laboratory. With Level 3 Testing, you can order a testing kit that is used to prepare your sample and submit it to the lab. By utilizing a lab, you have the assurance that a certified water expert had analyzed your water sample. If your test results reveal the presence of a contaminant that is cause for concern, you can either proceed to determine the best treatment options (see below) or continue to Level 4 Testing - Certified Testing.

Notes on Level 3 Testing for Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone)

Most comprehensive informational water quality testing kits that include volatile organic compounds will include MEK, but if the testing kit just says BETX you will only get results for benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylene which would be used for more of a gasoline or fuel-oil contamination.

Technical Note: If your water testing results show very low or trace levels of 2-Butanone, it is possible that the primary cause may be because of the preservation process that was used when the water sample was taken and the length of the holding time between collection and analysis. If low levels are documented in a sample and the use of MEK in the region is very limited, it may be advisable to collect a field-preserved sample and an unpreserved sample for analysis and reduce the maximum holding time to 50% of what is normally permitted.

Level 4 | Certified Water Testing

A Level 4 Certified Test Test uses chain-of-custody with a water professional coming to your home to prepare the water sample and then works with an accredited laboratory in order to certify your test results. This type of testing not only gives you the highest level of assurance in the accuracy of your test results, but can also be used as a document in legal cases. For Baseline Testing, we recommend that you use Certified Testing.

Notes on Level 4 Testing for Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone)

If you need certified testing for MEK, it would be advisable to test for a broader range of organic compounds, petrochemicals, other contaminants specific to the primary activity of concern, and other salts associated with the surrounding land-use activities. If you need help with finding a certified laboratory, please Contact our team.

Get Treatment | Methyl Ethyl Ketone (2-Butanone or MEK)

Pretreatment will most likely be needed to ensure acceptable treatment by the primary water treatment system that will be designed for MEK and other volatile organic compounds. Because MEK can be associated with the effects of the bioremediation of organic spills and releases, the contaminant plume may contain high levels of metals like aluminum, iron, manganese, and other salts. Periodic testing should be maintained after the treatment system is in place to ensure objectives are being met and the system is operating properly. Most systems will require maintenance on at least an annual basis. As a safeguard against contaminant break-through, it is necessary to conduct detailed water testing before and after any treatment systems and it may be advisable to consider the use of a "high quality" sub-micron carbon block or a granular-activated-carbon filter as a final barrier.

Short-Term Treatment

In the short term, the best course of action would be to provide an alternative drinking water source for all potable uses and conduct comprehensive testing to determine the type, nature, and source of the contamination. If the levels of volatile organics are at levels that do not violate a drinking water standard, you could consider installing a countertop treatment system that meets NSF Standard 53 for VOC reduction.

"NSF/ANSI 53 establishes the minimum requirements for the certification of POU/POE filtration systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants, such as Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Lead, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether), that may be present in public or private drinking water. The scope of NSF/ANSI 53 includes material safety, structural integrity, and health-related contaminant reduction performance claims. The most common technology addressed by this standard is Carbon Filtration." (Source)

Long-Term Treatment

If the contamination is linked to an event, an activity, or a chemical release, it is likely that the treatment may need to include remediation of the aquifer, an alternate water source, or a custom-designed treatment system. Because of the very volatile nature of the compound, the treatment system may include aeration to strip the volatile compounds and to oxidize Iron/Manganese, along with particle/Carbon Filtration and final polishing using UV Disinfection and, possibly, submicron filtration/Reverse Osmosis.
