Carbon Filtration Systems may use granular activated-carbon, composed of blocks of activated carbon. The carbon sources can include bituminous or anthracite coal, bone char, and even coconut shell. These filters use an adsorption process to remove certain impurities from the water because the carbon grains have a large surface area and because the media (the carbon grains) may have a size rating from 1 to 50 microns. The filter removes contaminants primarily by adsorption, i.e., the adhesion of the contaminant to the surface of the carbon. It has been estimated that 1 gram of activated (the carbon grains have been heated to drive off anything that might already adsorbed onto them) carbon may have a surface area of 5000 square feet to over 32,000 square feet (ft^2). That is a rectangle with a length of 100 feet and 32 feet wide. The filter can also remove contaminants through direct filtration and entrapment within the matrix. This is why it is normally wise to remove sediment particles in the water prior to the carbon filtration process. We do not want the activated adsorption sites blocked or clogged by larger debris or particles.
These types of filters are typically used to control Taste and Odor problems and Hydrogen Sulfide, but also can be used to remove organic compounds like Herbicides, Pesticides, Volatile Organic Compounds, Chlorine, Radon, Humic Acids (Color and Tannins), Trihalomethanes, and some metals, such as Arsenic, Lead, and Mercury. These filters need to be properly sized and maintained. In addition, it may be necessary to pretreat the water to minimize the potential for Bacterial regrowth in the carbon filter bed and to remove particles that may clog the filter and reduce the amount of exchange sites. The effectiveness of the carbon filtration process is a function of the empty-bed contact time , i.e., the length of time the contaminant is exposed to the carbon, contaminant type and concentration, water quality conditions like pH and temperature, the qualities of the activated carbon, level of pretreatment, and the qualities of the original carbon source.
